A Taste: Wontons with Spicy Sauce at Vanessa’s

Our “A Taste” feature presents single noteworthy dishes from NYC’s food scene.

Vanessa’s Dumpling House offers three locations where you can get their homemade dumplings at absurdly cheap prices. It’s classic street food; tasty, cheap, and served on disposable plates. We recently featured one of the Manhattan branches as part of our Lower East Side Food Tour.

Although we enjoy all of Vanessa’s dumplings, as well as the sesame pancakes, our favorite are these incredible wontons with “spicy sauce”. The wontons are nice and delicate with folds that are perfect for soaking up the puddle of spicy chili oil. They are topped with the bold flavors of garlic, chilies, and fresh herbs. It’s about as beautiful a presentation as you’ll ever see on a paper plate, with the taste to match.

At the Lower East Side location, this dish is prepared with Vanessa’s excellent shrimp wontons. But the Williamsburg and 14th Street locations offer more variety, including the vegetarian ones pictured here.
